Book an AppointmentUnderstanding the PET-CT Scan: A Window into Your Body’s Function
A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan is a cutting-edge nuclear medicine imaging technique that reveals the metabolic or biochemical function of your tissues and organs. Unlike MRI and CT scans, which primarily show anatomical structures, a PET scan highlights cellular activity. This makes it exceptionally powerful for detecting diseases in their earliest stages.
At Henotic Diagnostics, we combine the PET scan with a Computed Tomography (CT) scan. This PET-CT fusion provides a comprehensive image, overlaying the functional data from the PET onto the detailed anatomical map from the CT. The result is an incredibly precise diagnostic tool that helps doctors detect cancer, assess heart conditions, and evaluate brain disorders with unparalleled accuracy.
Types of PET Scans We Offer
Whole Body PET Scan
The most common type, used primarily for cancer staging, restaging, and monitoring treatment response. It scans from the base of the skull to mid-thigh.
Brain PET Scan
Evaluates brain abnormalities, including tumors, memory disorders like Alzheimer’s, and seizures. It helps differentiate between different types of dementia.
Cardiac PET Scan
Assesses blood flow to the heart muscle (myocardial perfusion) and helps determine damage after a heart attack. It’s a gold standard for checking heart viability.
Your PET-CT Scan Journey: A Step-by-Step Guide
The Clinical Procedure
- Pre-Scan Consultation: Review of medical history and recent reports (e.g., Serum Creatinine).
- Radiotracer Injection: Intravenous administration of a radiopharmaceutical, most commonly Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG).
- Uptake Phase: A 60-90 minute resting period where the FDG circulates and is absorbed by metabolically active cells.
- Image Acquisition: The patient lies on the scanner bed, which moves through the PET-CT machine. The scan itself is painless and typically takes 20-30 minutes.
- Post-Scan Observation: A brief waiting period to ensure the patient feels well before discharge.
In Simple Terms for Patients
- Check-in & Prep: We’ll review your documents and ask you to change into a comfortable gown.
- A Small Injection: You’ll receive a small, painless injection of a special glucose (sugar) tracer.
- Quiet Rest Time: You will relax in a quiet, comfortable room for about an hour. This lets the tracer travel through your body.
- The Scan: You’ll lie down on a cushioned bed that will slide slowly through a large, donut-shaped scanner. Just relax and lie still!
- All Done: After the scan, you can go home. We recommend drinking plenty of water to help flush the tracer from your system.
Essential Prerequisites
- Recent Serum Creatinine Report: Mandatory (within last 15 days) to ensure your kidneys can safely process the tracer.
- Previous Medical Records: Bring all past reports, biopsy results, and CDs of previous scans (PET, CT, MRI).
- Fasting is Crucial: A minimum of 6-8 hours of fasting is required. This ensures accurate tracer uptake.
Why is the Serum Creatinine Report Needed?
The radiotracer used in a PET scan is eliminated from your body through your kidneys. The Serum Creatinine test measures kidney function. A normal result confirms that your kidneys are healthy enough to filter out the tracer safely and efficiently after the scan. It’s a critical safety check for our patients.
Patient Preparation Checklist
- Fasting: No food or beverages (except plain water) for at least 6-8 hours before your appointment.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of plain water before the scan. This helps in tracer distribution and elimination.
- Medication: Take your regular medications unless advised otherwise by your doctor. Diabetic patients require special instructions – please inform us.
- Avoid Exercise: Refrain from strenuous physical activity for 24 hours before your scan as it can affect the results.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal zippers or buttons.
