What is a Liver FibroScan? (Scientific Context)
A Liver FibroScan, technically known as Transient Elastography (TE), is a state-of-the-art medical imaging procedure used to assess liver health. Unlike a traditional ultrasound, which creates a visual image, or a biopsy, which is an invasive surgical procedure, a FibroScan quantifies the physical properties of your liver.
It works by emitting a small, painless pulse of mechanical energy (a vibration) from a probe placed on the skin. The device then uses ultrasound to track the speed of the shear wave created by this pulse as it travels through the liver.
-
1. Stiff Liver (Fibrosis)
In a healthy liver, the wave travels slowly. In a stiff liver (one with scarring, or fibrosis), the wave travels much faster. The device measures this speed and converts it into a measurement of stiffness in kilopascals (kPa).
-
2. Fatty Liver (Steatosis)
The device also measures the attenuation (or “fading”) of the ultrasound wave as it passes through the liver. Fat content causes the wave to fade more quickly. This is measured using the Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP), providing a precise, quantitative score for fatty liver (steatosis).
What Your FibroScan Report Will Show
A single FibroScan provides two critical measurements that give a complete picture of your liver health.
1. Liver Stiffness (Fibrosis)
This measures the degree of scarring in your liver. The result is given in **kilopascals (kPa)** and corresponds to a **Fibrosis Score (F-Score)** from F0 to F4.
- F0 – F1: No or mild liver scarring. (Normal: 2-7 kPa)
- F2: Moderate liver scarring.
- F3: Severe liver scarring.
- F4: Advanced scarring (Cirrhosis).
2. Liver Fat (Steatosis)
This measures the amount of fat buildup in your liver. The result is the **Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP)** score, measured in **decibels per meter (dB/m)**.
- S0: Normal (CAP Score < 238 dB/m)
- S1: Mild Steatosis (11% to 33% fat)
- S2: Moderate Steatosis (34% to 66% fat)
- S3: Severe Steatosis (Over 67% fat)
*Note: The exact kPa range for each stage can differ. Our expert radiologists will interpret your score in the context of your medical history.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Is the Liver FibroScan painful?
A: No, it is completely painless. You will only feel a slight “tap” or vibration on your skin. There are no needles or injections.
Q: How long does the FibroScan test take?
A: The entire appointment is quick. The scan itself takes about 10-15 minutes, and you can resume your normal activities immediately.
Q: Do I really need to fast for a FibroScan?

A: We provide same-day reports, typically within 4 hours of your scan, delivered directly to your WhatsApp and email.
Q: Is FibroScan safe? Is there any radiation?
